Gautam Gambhir was selected to be the next head coach for Team India after careful consideration from the BCCI. Before the announcement, there had already been a lot of speculation about Gambhir assuming the role. Gautam will now have to end his contract with the Kolkata Knight Riders as their mentor. KKR won their third IPL trophy under the mentorship of Gautam Gambhir.
Gambhir’s special message to ex Head Coach Rahul Dravid
Gautam Gambhir’s appointment as head coach marks a new chapter for Indian cricket. Returning to the national camp in a new role, Gambhir feels honored. On Tuesday, he officially replaced Rahul Dravid as head coach of the reigning T20 World Champions. Dravid, in his final coaching stint, led India to an ICC title victory in the Caribbean, ending a long wait for the trophy.
Gambhir, a two-time World Cup winner, now takes on this new challenge. Gautam Gambhir acknowledged Rahul Dravid’s contributions after the BCCI announced Gambhir’s appointment as India’s new head coach. The former KKR mentor gave Dravid a special mention, highlighting his predecessor’s impact.
“It is an absolute honour to serve my tricolour, my people, my country. I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate Rahul Dravid and his team of support staff for their exemplary run with the team. I am honored and excited to take on the role of Head Coach for Team India,” Gambhir said after BCCI confirmed the appointment of the former India opener.
What Gautam said about his appointment
A crucial member of India’s victorious 2011 World Cup and 2007 T20 World Cup squads, Gautam Gambhir emerged as the top scorer for India in both ICC finals. Gambhir is eager to work with VVS Laxman, who is currently serving as India’s interim head coach for the five-match T20I series in Zimbabwe.
Following this tour, India will host Sri Lanka for three T20Is and three ODIs. The series against Sri Lanka will be Gambhir’s first task as the newly appointed head coach.
“I have always taken pride while donning the Indian jersey during my playing days and it is going to be no different when I take up this new role.” He said.
“Cricket has been my passion and I look forward to working closely with the BCCI, Head of Cricket – Mr VVS Laxman, the support staff, and, most importantly, the players, as we work towards achieving success in the upcoming tournaments,” Gambhir added.
Recognized as the ICC’s Test Player of the Year in 2009, Gambhir also captained Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to IPL championships in 2012 and 2014. Retiring from international cricket in 2016, he amassed a total of 10,324 runs across all formats
