Newcastle and Sunderland fans fight during police escort, objects thrown at bus, CPR administered

Newcastle and Sunderland fans fight during a police escort, objects were thrown at a bus, and CPR had to be administered to one supporter.

The Premier League’s Tyne-Wear derby returned to St James’ Park for the first time after an eight-year absence, Newcastle seeking revenge after Sunderland won 1-0 earlier in the season thanks to that own goal from Woltemade.

@CraigHope_DM tweeted: “Fighting outside of St James’ Park. One fan appeared in a bad way. CPR administered before being taken away. Not good 🙏🏻”

The Football Safety App (@footysafetyapp) wrote: “This is what’s wrong with football. This mindset. It will take a huge collective effort to root these characters out. Please download and report any such behaviour on the Football Safety App. Our 24 hour manned control room will be handling cases immediately.”

Magpies supporter Adam Pearson said in his video capturing what happened: “Some Sunderland fans were actually attacked heading into the ground today by probably the most bizarre police escort I’ve ever seen.

“But we’re going to show you how it worked, we’re going to show you the Sunderland fans that were involved, we’re going to show you the scenes before the game.

“A couple of hundred Sunderland fans were in a literal crowd of Newcastle. There was no police officers at first there, that was mental. I can’t believe nobody went for a swing there, there was not even police officers next to them, there was two officers.”

On objects hitting the Sunderland bus: “Well that is a massive fine for us in the morning but as far as Newcastle fans aren’t ones paying it.

Summarising what happened,  Adam went on: “What was the police doing there by the way, with those tiny groups of Sunderland fans going up the St James’s Police Unit in groups of 10 of them.

“I’m assuming maybe they’re people that missed the escort time or might for whatever reason have just been taken up in tiny groups.

“But sending groups of like Sunderland fans up during that crowd of you talking, tens of thousands of Newcastle fans all anticipating or waiting for the Sunderland fans.

“My word I cannot believe that first group of fans only had cans thrown off and that could have been so much worse for them.”

The game saw Anthony Gordon capitalise on a horrible error from Sunderland, a moment to forget for Luke O’Nien who saw his pass out of defence go straight to Woltemade who intercepted, the ball falling to Gordon, who made his way around Alderete and O’Nien, then smashed it to put the hosts ahead on the 10th minute.

Newcastle went closer to a second just before half time, a fine Lewis Hall delivery was met by Sven Botman, but his header came back against the woodwork.

Sunderland were level on 57 minutes, Aaron Ramsdale pushed away following a corner, Trai Hume knocked the ball back in, Brian Brobbey attempted to score at the far post, only to be blocked by Dan Burn, then it fell to Chemsdine Talbi, who made sure of it went in.

Newcastle thought they had gone back in front shortly after, Malick Thiaw headed in from a corner, but the goal was disallowed due to Jacob Murphy blocking off Melker Ellborg and being in an offside position.

But it was Sunderland who came away with the three points, Enzo Le Fée with a pass in from the byline and after Brian Brobbey had his first shot daved by Aaron Ramsdale, he netted the rebound.

Here’s the social media reaction after Newcastle and Sunderland fans scrap during a police escort, with objects thrown at a bus surrounded by a large crowd…

@LewLew277: I’m sorry but this isn’t on. I understand the rivalry, and I’m probably a part of the small minority who think this way. I’m all for banter and the odd sort of mayhem. All I care about is winning the football game. No one should go to the football and not return home. #Nufc

@Jus7Jay: Always a handful that can’t be trusted not to take it too far. That’s honking that

@ClaireWynarczyk: Any Newcastle fan fighting seriously needs their season ticket taken away. Why do people have to cause trouble

@shanehagan24; At the SOL, little to no trouble at all. As soon as they’re all together at their place, this shite. Cunts. The same people will go to work with their mates who support the other side tomorrow morning and have no issues. Pathetic #SAFC

@e_sunderland: They just can not behave themselves. Never could.

@markchoake: Was always going to happen! Should just be coaches in and out of the city with a escort! The walk from from central station to SJP is ridiculous, begging for trouble #NUFC #SAFC

@beanz2809: Absolutely ridiculous. Rivalries are there, tensions are high, but nobody deserves to not return from a football game. Absolute morons, the lot of them who are involved!! The tits blaming the police in these comments. I’d like to suggest it was the morons who were creating the havoc and fighting. Nobody deserves not to go home from a game of football 😩 ##NUFC 🖤🤍🖤🤍

@DevotionDj: All over football, the same people who sit in a office or factory the following day, or have friends who support one of the teams. But get in a pack & it shows the men with issues out clear as day. Grow up people. Pathetic. Go back home, look son I hit some fans and threw things

@dwils26: They are so pathetic! It’s a game! Is it really worth going to jail over. They take it so seriously like it’s life or death yet the funny thing is no one cares outside of Tyneside or Wearside. Grow up you pathetic idiots!
