What is it about Newcastle United and the woodwork?
Some crazy stats in play.
The question is, can Newcastle United break their addition to the woodwork.
With 23 matches played in all competitions, take a guess at how many times Newcastle United players have hit the crossbar and post.
You will find the answer to that below, but before we get there, here is a bit of a breakdown of the stats.
This is how many times each club’s players have hit the woodwork in the 15 rounds of Premier League matches so far:
9 Newcastle United, Man U
6 Burnley, Palace, Chelsea, Everton, Liverpool
5 Bournemouth, Sunderland, Man City, Wolves, Arsenal
4 Villa, Leeds
3 Brentford, Forest, Fulham, Brighton
2 Spurs
1 West Ham
I think fair to say that when you have hit the woodwork nine times in only 15 Premier League matches, you can count yourself pretty unlucky.
When you add in the fact that Newcastle United have now hit the woodwork twice in the Carabao Cup AND twice in the Champions League, it becomes even more bizarre, a massive 13 times striking the post or crossbar already for NUFC, in 23 matches in all competitions.
I think it gets even more and more bizarre, BUT also positive, when you then split the season so far in two for Newcastle United.
In the first 12 matches of this 2025/26 season, Newcastle United hit the woodwork only three times, against Wolves, Bradford and Forest.
In the most recent 11 games, Newcastle United have hit the woodwork 10 times, that is from Fulham at home in late October, United players hitting the woodwork 10 times in just over six weeks.
Break it down further and the last four matches have seen Newcastle United players hit the crossbar or post, six times! Once against Everton and the same against Spurs, then two each against Burnley and Bayer Leverkusen.
The last four matches have seen Newcastle United 16 times hitting either the woodwork or the back of the net.
My take on all of this is that Eddie Howe’s players are getting in more and more dangerous strikes and there are plenty on target as well as off target.
A team that is doing the above, is I think, set to score a lot of goals if they continue in this kind of fashion.
The finishing needs to be improved as well, especially inside the penalty area.
However, I think we are seeing a far better goal threat building up and Yoane Wissa could be a massive addition to that, once he is fully fit and starting.
Anthony Gordon coming into form is massive as well.
He came off the bench against Spurs and his run and cross led to Bruno’s goal.
Then in his two starts against Burnley and Bayer Leverkusen he has been sensational.
As well as scoring penalties against both, he has been a massive threat otherwise.
Creating for others AND giving Newcastle United a huge goal threat from shooting outside the box, something we haven’t been great at. He has hit the woodwork three times across these last two matches and goals will come with that kind of ability, especially shooting with both feet.
