Newey calls out Honda as real cause of massive engine struggles revealed
Adrian Newey attempted to explain why Honda has found itself struggling so much at the start of its new partnership with Aston Martin.

“A lot of the group that reformed were actually fresh to Formula One. They didn’t bring the experience that they had had previously”

Honda’s story since returning to Formula 1 in 2015 with McLaren has been a rollercoaster. The first five years with the Woking outfit proved an outright failure, before the Japanese manufacturer went on to form a highly successful partnership with Red Bull that delivered multiple world titles.

A similar trajectory had been expected from the new partnership with Aston Martin, especially after the Japanese giant had re-established itself as a benchmark on the engine side in recent years, but so far reality has told a very different story.

Speaking at the team principals’ press conference in Melbourne, the Briton explained the reasons behind these current struggles: “A bit of history is important there. Honda pulled out at the end of 2021. They then re-entered the sport kind of at the end of 2022, so over roughly a year and a bit out of competition.

“When they reformed, a lot of the original group had, in their transfers, disbanded, gone to work on solar panels or whatever. And so a lot of the group that reformed were actually fresh to F1. They didn’t bring the experience that they had had previously.

He then added: “When it came back in 2023, that was the first year of the budget cap introduction for engines. So all their rivals had been developing away through ’21–’22 with continuity, their existing team, and free of budget cap.

“They re-entered with, let’s say, only — I’m guessing — 30% of their original team, and now in a budget cap era. So they started very much on the back foot, and unfortunately they’ve struggled to catch back up.”

Newey fears ‘big problem’ as Aston Martin risks missing multiple races

Aston Martin are facing a worrying shortage of batteries, with Adrian Newey admitting the situation could quickly turn into a “big problem” if the team were to lose even one of the units currently in use.

The British designer had already raised serious concerns on Thursday over the violent vibrations affecting the car — warning they could even lead to permanent nerve damage in the drivers’ hands. Now, the battery situation has emerged as another major headache, with the Silverstone-based outfit potentially at risk of missing more than one Grand Prix should their limited supply run out.
