The Calgary Flames haven’t spoken to MacKenzie Weegar about his no-trade clause, but they are expected to over the next week
Daily Faceoff: David Pagnotta on Calgary Flames defenseman MacKenzie Weegar, who as of Thursday, haven’t talk about waiving his no-trade clause. It’s expected the sides will have that conversation in the next week. There are teams that are interested in the right-handed defenseman.
“What I can tell you is to this point, as of we’re doing this, (Flames GM) Craig Conroy has not reached out to Weegar and his camp about his no-trade clause. He’s got a full no-trade clause, so he will have say in where he ends up.
I anticipate that actually happening some point over this next week. How that conversation goes, I don’t know. I’m not MacKenzie Weegar. But I expect that conversation to happen over the next week, to at least give the flames an idea as to what he would consider, if anything. He can easily say, ‘No, he doesn’t want to go anywhere.’
Two of the teams that have been most prominently tied to him have been Ottawa and Detroit. I’m not overly sure Ottawa, even though it’s kind of hometown for him, is a fit right now. I know Steve Staois likes the player. I know guys in Ottawa really like the player. I just don’t know if that’s a fit, and I would be a little bit surprised if he were to wave to go there right now at this point of his career.
NHL Rumors: Blackhawks, Kings, Maple Leafs, Flames, Senators, Panthers, and Jets
Detroit, interesting. Boston, also looking for a right shot D. That would be interesting to see what those types of teams would try to accomplish in order to get MacKenzie Weegar. But I suspect if there are legitimate cup contenders that reach out, whether it’s Tampa, for example, or another team, a Cup contender, that’s looking to shore up their back end.
Bringing a right shot guy that can play both the left and right side. Solid cap hit for one of the most underrated, still, defensemen in the National Hockey League, just over 6 million. There’s going to continue to be interest in him.
Again, I expect some type of conversation about waving his no trade, or understanding where he’s at over this next week. There’s no real rush. He’s got a lot of term left on his contract, but he is a very attractive piece.”
