Matt Marchese: “Jonathan Toews, it was, it was going to be a slow start after you haven’t played that long, but the play recently has picked up. The offense picked up.
But if there is, you know, and maybe he rides this out until the trade deadline, but do you think there’s a chance that he would consider moving to another destination if he believes that this is his last, his last go round, and he wants to make it. You know, give it another go for a Stanley Cup. Or do you think that there is a longer-term fit here with Jonathan Toews?
NHL Rumors: Who is the Next New York Rangers Player to be Traded?
Wiebe: “Yeah, Mattie, it’s a great question. And I do think that Jonathan is going to want to play beyond this year. I mean, obviously there were some challenges at various points in terms of, you know, lengthy spells without offensive production. But I think he’s got himself in a good place coming out of the break.
Now, that offense has tailed a little bit, now that the schedule is ramped up again. But I do see a guy that could help a contending team. We know teams like the Colorado Avalanche and Tampa Bay Lightning were among those interested when he was deciding before choosing Winnipeg.
I think he’s loved the experience of playing in his hometown. But you guys know this, as much as Jonathan loves winning, he hates losing, and this is a guy hasn’t been to the playoffs since 2020 I think, if I’m not mistaken. So, for a guy who came back to try to win the cup, I do think that he would be open.
I know you guys had Elliotte on, and they said that was going to be a topic of conversation, you know, with the representatives of tabs during the Olympic break. I do think that he’s enjoying things, and I think that, given the way he’s wired, he would love to see if he could help push the Jets into more of a playoff situation.
But I think he also thinks that if it could help the organization, I think he would be open to go into a contender. But again, he hasn’t spoken about this. He’s focused on that here and now. But I do think it’s an intriguing situation. But I do think that he’s a guy that can help, help, help a contender down the stretch, for sure.

And I do think he’ll play more than one year, just because he’s got through the challenges of being back in an Olympic year with such a condensed schedule.”
