Nienaber’s Leinster lash sorry Sale

Nienaber’s Leinster lash sorry Sale

Leinster ran in five second-half tries to claim a convincing Investec Champions Cup quarter-final win against the Sale Sharks in Dublin on Saturday.

Jacques Nienaber’s side only led 7-3 at half-time but pulled away to win 43-13.

Leinster will host Toulon, who defeated the Glasgow Warriors 22-19 at Scotstoun Stadium, in the semi-finals.

In windy conditions in the Irish capital, the home side scored early through Ireland hooker Dan Sheehan. Scrumhalf Jamison Gibson-Park whipped a sharp pass to his international teammate, captaining the side in the absence of the injured Caelan Doris, to slide over.

Sale chipped away with a George Ford penalty as Leinster struggled to make further inroads.

However, the home side took a firm grip of the contest after the break as Sale resistance crumbled.

South African No 8 Dan du Preez had been yellow-carded shortly before half-time and there was more woe for Sale as prop Si McIntyre was sent to the bin three minutes into the second half.

Leinster’s second try came three minutes into the second half when flank Ryan Baird, with the line at his mercy, passed back inside for fullback Hugo Keenan for a 12-3 lead and the home side never looked back.

Ford added another penalty for Sale, but Baird’s try in the 53rd minute knocked the stuffing out of the visitors.

Moments later, winger Rieko Ioane crossed for their fourth try and flyhalf Harry Byrne’s conversion took them out to a 26-6 lead.
