India Women (IND-W) suffered a tough loss against Sri lanka Women (SL-W) in a bail-biting encounter at R Premadasa Stadium, Colombo on Sunday, May 4. The home team won the game by three wickets and got their second consecutive victory in the Tri-Nation Series. The hosts, in a historic development, won an ODI against IND-W after seven years and it is only their third victory against them.
The India Women had a bit of a rough start where, despite the batters getting good starts, none of them were able to convert them into big scores. However, some crucial runs from the lower order and a half century from Richa Ghosh got the team to a decent total of 275/9 in the end. The Sri lanka Women bowlers would still be happy with their performance where they put a lot of pressure on the batters.
The hosts’ batters had some important partnerships with the bat as well which was enough to put the India Women bowlers under the pump. Though the spell from Sneh Rana (3/45 in 10 overs) caused a few problems for the batters they kept their nerves in the tough chase and reached the target with five balls to spare in the end.
Harshitha and Nilakshika’s knocks make the difference
Though the batters involved in the eighth-wicket partnership should be praised, where Anushka Sanjeewani and Sugandika Kumari kept their nerves, it was the knocks from Harshitha Samarawickrama (53 off 61 deliveries) and Nilakshika Silva (56 off 33 deliveries) that boosted the chase. Harshitha made sure she kept the runs flowing at the top, and Nilakshika put the pressure on the bowlers with her fearless approach.
Nilakshika was also the Player of the Match for her knock, which came at a crucial moment in the game where her team was under pressure. Her innings included five beautiful boundaries and three maximums and was striking at 169.7 throughout her innings.
