India’s latest all-round sensation, Nitish Kumar Reddy has enjoyed a breakout season this year. After a stellar display in the Indian Premier League (IPL 2024) playing for the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), he earned his debut in the T20I series against Bangladesh earlier this month.
Now, on the merit of his talent and scintillating performances, he has been included in the India squad for the highly-anticipated five-match Border Gavaskar Trophy, starting next month.
While Reddy has raised his stocks with his consistent display, the 21-year-old opened up on the imperative advice he got from coach Gautam Gambhir during the second T20I against Bangladesh where he slammed his maiden T20I fifty.
In just his second T20I appearance, Nitish Kumar Reddy came in to bat at number four and rescued the team from a tough position after they were struggling at 41/3 in 5.3 overs. Reddy reached his maiden international fifty with an impressive innings, scoring 74 runs off 34 balls, including four fours and seven sixes.

In a chat with HT, the talented youngster revealed what Gambhir had told him during the knock that helped his mindset to play a big knock.
Reddy says, “At the start, it was nothing. They were telling me to play in an aggressive way. The kind of approach I showed in IPL, they were telling me to go with the same approach, same mindset, everything. Just play according to the situation. I still remember during the drinks break when Gautam Sir came in and I played reverse sweep it needed a DRS. When it was given not out as it was the umpire’s call, he came in the centre and he told me, Nitish, you have good power. You can clear the boundary line easily. You have no need to play reverse sweep on these kind of wickets because the ball is keeping low.”
“He told me to back my power. So I just backed my power and rest of the things went very well. The over bowled by the spinner turned out very well for me at that time.”
