Due to the current political unrest and violence in Bangladesh, the International Cricket Council (ICC) is considering different locations to hold the 2024 Women’s T20 World Cup. The event, which was planned to take place in Bangladesh in October, might be moved to another country.
The ICC initially asked the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to host the tournament, but the BCCI secretary rejected the idea, mentioning the rainy season in India and their commitment to hosting the ODI World Cup the following year.
“The International Cricket Council (ICC) asked if we would organize the World Cup. I clearly said no. We are in the rainy season, and we are also planning to host the women’s One Day International (ODI) World Cup next year. I don’t want to send any messages that we want to host back-to-back World Cups,” BCCI Shah said in an interview with The Times of India.
The Times of India reports that the United Arab Emirates (UAE) is now the leading candidate since India declined. The region has three top-notch stadiums in Abu Dhabi, Dubai, and Sharjah.
In addition to the UAE, Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe are also being considered. A decision about the location might be made by the end of this week.
Recently, there were news stories saying that the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) wants to talk to the United Nations (UN) about keeping the chance to host a big women’s cricket tournament. This happened because some countries like India, England, Australia, New Zealand, and Scotland told their people not to go to Bangladesh because of the fighting happening there.
Different news sources say that more than 400 people have died in Bangladesh during student-led protests.
Ten countries will play in the women’s T20 World Cup, which starts on October 3 and ends on October 20. There will be 23 games in two cities, Dhaka and Sylhet.
