Two-time champion Novak Djokovic has officially withdrawn from the upcoming Monte Carlo Masters, tournament organizers confirmed on Friday.
The 38-year-old Serbian, currently ranked No. 3 in the world, continues to struggle with a right shoulder injury that previously forced him to skip the Miami Open. This marks the first time since 2011 that the 24-time Grand Slam winner will be absent from the prestigious clay-court event in the Principality.
A Difficult Start to the 2026 Season
Despite a strong start to the year, reaching the Australian Open final in February, Djokovic’s recent form has seen physical setbacks.
- Indian Wells: Lost in the Round of 16 to defending champion Jack Draper in a tight three-set match.
- Miami Open: Withdrew prior to the tournament to focus on shoulder rehabilitation.
- Monte Carlo: Officially pulled out today, citing the need for further recovery.
In an Instagram post on Friday, tournament officials expressed their disappointment:
“We send him our best wishes and hope to see him back on court very soon.”
Implications for the Clay Season
Djokovic’s absence leaves a significant void in the draw, which is already missing American world No. 7 Taylor Fritz. However, the field remains very competitive with world No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz set to defend his title.
The withdrawal raises questions about Djokovic’s preparation for Roland Garros in June. There are suggestions he may target a return at the Madrid Open or the Italian Open in Rome to find his rhythm on clay before the next Grand Slam.
