Olivier Giroud, the French national team’s record goalscorer, has called time on his international career after a substitute appearance in their Euro 2024 semi-final loss to Spain.
The 37-year-old striker, who secured a move to Major League Soccer’s Los Angeles FC after his stint with AC Milan, announced his retirement before the tournament began.
A Legacy of Goals and Leadership
Giroud’s international career spanned 137 appearances, a remarkable feat in itself. However, it’s his record-breaking 57 goals that will see him remembered as a French footballing icon.
While his playing time at Euro 2024 was limited, coach Didier Deschamps paid tribute to Giroud’s professionalism and dedication throughout his career.
“He had a lot of good moments, but also some more difficult ones,” Deschamps said. “He is an example of longevity, seriousness and professionalism. Even though he had less playing time at this Euro, he was fully with the squad. He is one of the leaders. I want to say well done and thank you.”
World Cup Glory and Near Misses
Giroud’s international career included some of the highest highs French football has witnessed. He was a key member of the 2018 World Cup-winning squad, even if he didn’t find the net himself in Russia.
Four years later, he displayed his continued goal-scoring prowess in Qatar, netting four times as France reached the final, ultimately falling to Argentina on penalties.
Giroud also featured in the losing sides of Euro 2016 and the 2022 World Cup final, showcasing his consistent presence on the international stage.
Stepping Aside for the Next Generation
When announcing his retirement, Giroud acknowledged the physical demands of international football at his age.
“I thought about it carefully,” he said. “Playing every three days is more and more difficult, especially at this level.”
With his international career at an end, Giroud will turn his focus to his new challenge in MLS. His experience and leadership will undoubtedly be invaluable to his new club, while French football looks to the next generation of goal-scorers to fill the void he leaves behind.
