O’Neill frustrated at Blackburn being denied penalty; Mousinho fumes at Portsmouth players

Blackburn boss Michael O’Neill told BBC Radio Lancashire:

“The game probably tells you where both teams are, the seasons they have had, and what is at stake.

“We have to be pleased, given we were behind going into stoppage time. I thought we showed good character to keep going. We had the better chances, but we were a bit tense and nervous at times.

“We limited them to very little but we didn’t take care of the ball enough to take control of the game. But if you can’t win the game the key is not to lose it and we managed not to do that.

“We are disappointed not have had a penalty awarded to us at 0-0, too, and if he [Yuki Ohashi] makes good contact in the first few minutes it would have been a different situation.

“In terms of attitude the lads gave everything they should. The subs gave us energy when they came on, too.”

Blackburn’s Michael O’Neill, per Sky Sports:

“We have to be pleased with a point given you’re behind going into stoppage time. I thought we showed good character to keep going.

“It was a difficult game I felt. We had the better chances in the game but, at times, our overall play was a little bit tense, a bit nervous. We needed to be better with the ball.

“At times when we did show our quality, we saw the chances we did create in the game, particularly in the early part. We’re disappointed not to have a penalty awarded at 0-0.

“The ball’s come across, there’s no contact on the ball from Terry and he just collides into the back of Yuki.

“You can’t really play an advantage in that situation. I don’t think he did do that. The referee had a clear view of the incident and he didn’t give the penalty.

“But there was no contact on the ball from the Portsmouth player. So yeah, we’re disappointed in that at obviously a crucial time in the game as well.”

“I felt we limited them to very little in the game but equally we didn’t take care of the ball enough to get enough control in the game. But we showed good spirit and at times showed good quality to create the chances that we did. Ultimately, if you can’t win the game, the key is not to lose it.”

Portsmouth’s John Mousinho, to Sky Sports, per portsmouth.co.uk:

“Yeah, incredibly tough, I’m furious with the way we saw the game out.

“We went a goal up, whether we deserved to or not in a tight game, I think it was a very good away performance for 85 minutes. And as soon as we scored, I don’t know what we were doing… just completely unacceptable.

“I think we’ve got probably an issue in the group with the mentality of how we go about our business sometimes.

“We went three goals up against Charlton and decided to let them back into the game, and went two goals up against Millwall… the same thing (happened) when we were in complete control of the game.

“And, today, nothing in the game, we go a goal up, should see the game out, but for some reason we completely changed the way we were approaching it.

“We don’t win headers, we don’t win tackles, we slash at clearances, we forget to win second balls, we show them back inside. It’s completely different from the first 85, 86 minutes, so I’m not accepting it.

“I think it’s completely up to us what we want to do, whether we want to come away from places like this with three points or we want to be in a relegation scrap, and that’s the mentality that has to change.

“I think there’s been a lot of good performances recently and, again, I’d count today as another very, very impressive away performance in tough circumstances.

“We should just be coming away here with a goal lead and I think in some of those other games we can certainly forgive certain aspects of the game but not today.

“We can’t go a goal ahead away from home and shoot ourselves in the foot like we did.

“It was a pretty even game, to be honest. I thought we controlled the game largely in terms of possession.

“We didn’t create a huge amount but when you’re playing away from home, sometimes it’s just important to make sure you stay in the game at half-time.

“After 60 minutes, it’s 0-0 and we looked like a dangerous side. I thought in the second half we created quite a few opportunities and scored the goal from the set-piece and really should have seen the game out from there.”

Here’s the social media reaction with O’Neill frustrated at Blackburn being denied a penalty and Mousinho fumes at his Portsmouth players….

@PompeyTdog: Couldn’t hold on for 2 minutes how fucking disappointing

@CamGpfc: Horrible performance, from both sides, but the fact we couldnt hold that lead for a few minutes is shambolic.

@PFCNoah: Games like this could cost us. Alli was poor again but no one will call it out, need to give up on Blair i think. Schmid realistically should’ve saved it given that he got a hand to it. Only registered one shot on target and for fucks sakes, stop taking so many long shots??

@DanKnight10: 10 men in the box defending in injury time and we leave a CB unmarked on the penalty spot. This team always finds a way to throw away points

@BourbonBert: An awful game between 2 awful teams creating sod all. Woeful. I love Bishop but why start him every week? This can’t go on!

@andymp345: That really disgraceful to concede that late Blair awful marking that have do better

@HazzaTWood96: We get an away draw against Blackburn, Ogilvie’s goal was not enough for a vital victory, so frustrating that we’ve dropped two points so late on but at least we didn’t lose, PUP. 🔹🔷🔵💙 #Pompey

@joerobbs: That just about sums us up. Doing our very best to get ourselves relegated when we should be comfortably clear of it. Tuesday night is MUST WIN.

@HarvMarksy: Another game neither team were any good or deserved to win. But put ourselves in the position we weren’t able to against Hull, Sheff U & Preston. They held on. Of course we couldn’t. 3 points could’ve been huge especially against a rival. Blair has to stand his man up better.

@pompeychiv: It was so obvious to everyone that Blackburn wanted to chuck in as many crosses as possible and stopping them would be key to holding on. Clearly Blair did get the memo. Pathetic attempt to stop the cross. Feel Schmid should have done better too. More points thrown away

@Monty5493: Pathetic result. Pathetic team: we deserve to go down. #rovers

@TwooterHead: 100% honestly don’t see another win this season. Zero quality throughout. Strikers that cannot even hit the target. There is always a chance of scoring if you shoot on target, never score when shooting off target #rovers

@Leap_year_man: Still feels like a loss, stonewall pen as usual we don’t get given. But we’re crap simple as that, zero quality & I’ve no confidence in this group to fight, still convinced we’re down. Don’t blame MON, nothing to work with. To top it off our CB is a better finisher than our CFs. #rovers
