Yesterday, Susan and I went early to the Trevi fountain, where we saw social media influencer. She had heels in a white dress and as soon as she was done put on sweatpants and tennis shoes! We went earlier, but it was still packed before 8 AM. Then we headed off to the Roma Termini train station. We planned to store two bags there since we will return to Rome later in the month. We found a place across from the main station that was reasonable and arranged to leave our bags there the next day.
Since we were already at the main train station, I decided we should do a half day trip to the old Roman port of Ostia Antica, about an hour from the train station. It was only three euros each for the round-trip so that was a pretty good deal.
We wandered around the old port for about three hours. It was immense yet I understand much smaller than Pompeii.
It was a beautiful day and really nice to get out of the crowded city. There were a lot of school groups there.
The city at one time had underground pipes for plumbing, three-story apartment buildings, massive public buildings, warehouses, buildings for firefighters, 9 m wide streets (about 30 feet).
There was also a cemetery a wall that surrounded the old town, although the town expanded past the city walls eons ago. It was a port city and also along a river. There were many public private baths.
The site now is about 2 miles from the sea.
Building state from the third century BC.
With the fall of the Roman empire of the city, slowly decayed.
