Some records sit around waiting for someone to catch them. Others get flattened by a man who treats them like routine work. Alex Ovechkin is in that second category.
Ovechkin Scored Twice Against the Flyers to Hit the 30-Goal Milestone
Tuesday night at Capital One Arena, he scored twice in the Capitals’ 6-4 win over Philadelphia, and with that first goal, he reached 30 goals for the 20th time in his 21 NHL seasons. Twenty times isn’t some hot streak or lucky run — it’s just who Ovechkin is. It’s a career-long habit.
The first goal came the familiar way: Matt Roy drove the net, pulled the goalie out of position, and Ovechkin finished the tap-in. The second was a diving snap from the right circle off a Connor McMichael feed — not a highlight-reel goal, but efficient and effective, which is Ovechkin’s real specialty.
Ovechkin Joined a Select Group of Older Scorers
At 40, he becomes one of a group of players who include Gordie Howe, Johnny Bucyk, and Teemu Selanne. Those legends were still banging in 30 goals deep into their later years. The raw numbers are wild — 14 seasons with at least 40 goals and 9 seasons with 50, tied right there with Gretzky and Bossy. And of course, as everyone knows, he passed Gretzky’s all-time goal record not too long ago.
Right now, he’s got 928 goals in the regular season, and when you add the playoffs, he’s crossed the 1,000-goal mark. Those kinds of numbers don’t feel like regular stats anymore — they feel like a whole era of hockey.
Ovechkin’s Game Hasn’t Changed Much
What matters most is the sameness. Players adapt, roles shrink, speed wanes. Ovechkin’s game has shifted only where it needs to. The essential skills remain. He still finds the net-front chances, still times his runs into the high-danger areas, still finishes with the same blunt efficiency. That combination of longevity and identity is what separates a great season from a remarkable career.
Ovechkin was the No. 1 pick in 2004. He never left the part of the ice that made him great. He just kept doing it, year after year.
Ovechkin’s Greatness Has Become Routine
Some careers rise and fall. Others coast in and out of brilliance. Ovechkin’s is different: sustained, unshowy, relentless. If you’re trying to explain consistency in hockey, start with him.
