Packers Make Extremely Smart Free Agent Decision That Went Unnoticed By Most – WI Sports Heroics

The Green Bay Packers quietly pulled off one of the more savvy strategies of the 2026 NFL free agency period.  While there has been a substantial amount of turnover so far on both sides of the ball, the team has positioned themselves nicely in 2027.

The teams is likely to land four compensatory draft picks in 2027. While some fans focused on the lack of blockbuster moves, general manager Brian Gutekunst executed a deliberate, cap-conscious plan that could pay massive dividends down the road.

Packers Likely To Land 4 Compensatory Picks In 2027

Compensatory picks are awarded when a team experiences a net loss of players in free agency. The more valuable players a team loses (based on salary and playing time), the higher the compensatory selections they receive the following year.

According to updated projections from Over The Cap, the Packers are on track to receive the maximum of four compensatory picks in 2027 after losing four key contributors:

  • QB Malik Willis (signed with the Miami Dolphins) – projected as a fourth-round compensatory pick
  • WR Romeo Doubs (signed with the New England Patriots) – projected fourth-rounder
  • LB Quay Walker (signed with the Las Vegas Raiders) – projected fifth-rounder
  • EDGE Kingsley Enagbare (signed with the New York Jets) – projected sixth-rounder

How the Packers Masterfully Collected Their Compensatory Picks

Gutekunst and the front office were very aware of the compensatory formula and structured their moves accordingly. Instead of signing high-profile free agents that would offset the losses, they made calculated additions that did not negatively impact the formula:

  • Signed DT Javon Hargrave: (2 years, $23 million) — Green Bay signed him after the Minnesota Vikings released him.
  • Traded for LB Zaire Franklin: Trades do not impact compensatory pick eligibility, allowing the Packers to upgrade the position while still benefiting from Quay Walker’s departure.
  • Signed CB Benjamin St-Juste (2 years, $10 million) — A cost-effective secondary addition that did not offset the net loss.
  • Signed WR/KR/PR Skyy Moore (1-year deal) — A low-cost special teams and depth piece that preserved the compensatory outlook.

Why This Smart Strategy Matters for the Packers’ Future

The Packers entered the 2026 offseason with limited cap space and no first-round pick after the Micah Parsons trade with Dallas. By prioritizing compensatory pick preservation, Gutekunst ensured Green Bay will have extra draft capital to address future needs.
