Pakistan have left out former captain Babar Azam from their 15-member ODI squad for the upcoming three-match series against Bangladesh in March 2026.
The squad will be led by pace spearhead Shaheen Shah Afridi. The decision marks a big shift in Pakistan’s plans as the selectors look to rebuild and test new talent after a disappointing T20 World Cup campaign.
The three ODIs will be played at the Sher-E-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Dhaka on March 11, 13, and 15.
Squad Signals Transition Phase
Pakistan have picked six uncapped players in the squad. Abdul Samad, Maaz Sadaqat, and Shamyl Hussain are among the new faces included as part of what the PCB calls a transitional phase.
Along with Babar Azam, several other regular players have also been left out. Saim Ayub, Shadab Khan, Mohammad Nawaz, and Naseem Shah did not find a place in the squad.
The selection panel said the move is aimed at giving younger players a chance and preparing the team for the next 50-over World Cup cycle.
Senior batter Fakhar Zaman was unavailable for selection. He is recovering from a hamstring injury he picked up during the recent T20 World Cup.
Form Concerns Behind Babar’s Omission
Selectors pointed to Babar Azam’s recent form as a key reason for the decision. During the 2026 T20 World Cup, the star batter scored only 91 runs across four innings.
His ODI numbers in 2025 also dipped compared to his usual standards. Babar averaged 34 across 17 innings last year, much lower than his career ODI average of 53.73.
The PCB said the break could help out-of-form players regain rhythm and focus before returning to international cricket.
Mixed Reactions to the Decision
The decision has sparked debate in the cricket world. Former Pakistan captain Mohammad Yousuf called the move “mind-boggling” on social media, pointing to Babar’s strong ODI record over the years.
Some international observers have also raised concerns about Babar’s recent struggles. Former players Ricky Ponting and Faf du Plessis recently said his game appears to lack the power needed for the faster pace of modern white-ball cricket.
Despite the drop, Babar Azam still holds an impressive record in global events. He remains Pakistan’s highest run-scorer in T20 World Cup history with 610 runs.
For now, Pakistan appear ready to move forward with a younger group as they begin a new chapter in Dhaka.
