Champions Trophy Update 2025: Pakistan’s Champions Trophy Future at Risk

View below topics in this post

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has made an important request to the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) about the 2025 Champions Trophy. Pakistan must decide whether to accept a proposed ‘Hybrid Model‘ for hosting the tournament or risk being left out entirely. Let’s look at Champions Trophy Update 2025.

This request follows an ICC executive board meeting on November 29, where there was no agreement on the tournament’s schedule.

If ICC accepts, India will play its matches in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) because of ongoing security concerns that prevent India from traveling to Pakistan. All other matches would take place in Pakistan. While some ICC board members understand Pakistan’s situation, most believe the Hybrid Model is the best solution to ensure the tournament happens.

Meanwhile, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has firmly rejected the Hybrid Model, insisting on hosting the tournament entirely in Pakistan. This stance remains despite the possibility of relocation. If the PCB keeps opposing the Hybrid Model, the ICC may have to move the tournament, likely to the UAE, without Pakistan’s participation.

What Happens if Pakistan Loses Champions Trophy Hosting Rights?

If Pakistan loses the hosting rights, it will also lose a $6 million hosting fee and a significant part of its annual cricket revenue, estimated at around $35 million. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), through Secretary Jay Shah, has stated that the Indian cricket team will not travel to Pakistan due to security concerns. The Indian Ministry of External Affairs supports this position.

PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi attended the ICC meeting to support Pakistan’s case, but the International Cricket Council insists that the Hybrid Model is the only practical option. If the ICC decides to hold the Champions Trophy without Pakistan, it may discuss compensating Pakistan for losing hosting rights.

However, if the PCB dismisses the Hybrid Model, the tournament will likely move, threatening Pakistan’s role in international cricket and its potential earnings from this important event.
