Palm Beach Gardens Day 2: Round of 16 & Quarterfinal Action on a Sunny Tuesday

Draws can be viewed here by USTA members only. (Sorry about that…I don’t make the rules though…)

The obligatory weather report: it was sunny but cool today with lows in the 40s but warming into the 60s in the afternoon, and mostly a light breeze (with a few cold gusts). Tomorrow the high will be in the 70s and all the singles matches will start at 9am sharp!

In the 60s, the four seeds reached the semis without dropping a set. Vicki Buholz (1) now plays Anna Zimmermann (4), and Jenny Rens Keller (2) will take on Ellen Markowitz (3) tomorrow.

In 60 doubles, for some reason only three seeds are listed and all four reached the semis, along with Markowitz/Sylvia Kodsi. Buholz/Rens won decisively and take on Stacey Williams/Mariana Hollman (seeded, 3, who won 62 75 over Rangel/Morgan); Kodsi/Markowitz beat Zimmermann/Simone 76 75 and Charlton/Kaleel (2) beat Esswin/Collins 76 64.

In the 70s, all eight seeds advanced to the semis, but Janet Mosely took a set off of #2 Bunnie Jackson, who won the first and third sets 61 60 but dropped the second 64, commenting that Mosely played extremely well in the second set. Jackson now plays Andrea Barnes (6); Pat Purcell (3) takes on #8 Kathy Foulk; Leslie Murveit (4) has a rematch with Una Davis (7) (they played last month) and I play Tina Karwasky (5) in a tough quarterfinal! I beat Sherri Bronson today.

In 70 doubles, Bunnie Jackson and I will play Barnes/Murveit, the #3 seeds tomorrow and Purcell/Betsy Savitt (#2) take on Karwasky/Foulk (4). Karwasky/Foulk had to go three sets to get past Donna Drosner/Debbie Burgess.

In the 80s, there was actually an upset, though a narrow one. Sharon Greene upset #4 Brenda Winstead 75 in the third; and #2 Betty Wachob had to go three long sets to beat Carol Clay 64 67 63. Greene plays Wachob next while Sue Kimball (1) and Brenda Carter (3) play in the other semi; they both won handily today.

The 80 doubles has 7 teams and they are playing two round robins of 3 and 4 teams respectively; the winners of each group will play for gold.
