Ahead of the 51st match of the IPL 2025 between Gujarat Titans (GT) and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), Pat Cummins shed light on the role of a captain in cricket compared to that in other sports. The SRH captain felt the major difference was the focus on tactics. He felt a cricket captain must immerse himself in tactics and bring ideas.
The Australian felt that a cricket captain is generally not alone but has to make decisions and take big calls based on instinct. While Cummins noted that captains have the support of fellow players and coaches, he added that a cricket captain’s role in making decisions plays a key part in the success or failure of a team.
“The biggest difference is the focus on the captain to do tactics. I think the reality is, you never are quite alone. A lot of calls, you gotta make them by your instincts. You always get recommended by the coaches, players, and those kinds of things,” Cummins said in the viral video of the interview with Star Sports.

Pat Cummins’ masterclass on cricket captaincy
The leader of SRH opened up on the key points he felt were necessary for a captain. He pointed out factors such as managing teammates, making sure they are in a good space, and setting up the environment for success as key roles for a cricket captain. He claimed to love these aspects of the job. Besides, the star player felt that the off-field touring life plays a bigger role than a captain’s antics on the field.
“The other things that are probably more important in my eyes are how you manage your teammates, how you make sure they are in a good space, and how you set up the environment for success. They are the things that I enjoy about my job,” the Australian pacer added further.
“It’s the off-field touring life. How do you try and create an environment so that when you do step onto the field, you feel like you’re in a very good place,” Cummins concluded.
