Pat McAfee’s Role In Randy Orton Storyline Not Driven By WWE Creative — REPORT

The April 3, 2026, episode of WWE SmackDown delivered one of its most controversial moments in recent memory. Pat McAfee was revealed as Randy Orton’s mystery caller. However, while the shocking twist was intended to elevate the ongoing storyline and feud with Cody Rhodes, a new report suggests the decision may not have come from WWE’s creative team at all.

In the episode, McAfee aligned himself with Randy Orton after he hit a low blow to Rhodes. Afterward, he cut a promo talking about the degradation of WWE in recent times. The reveal was supposed to build more hype around the rivalry ahead of WrestleMania. However, instead, it drew criticism from fans and from Rhodes himself.

During an in-ring promo later in the show, Rhodes referenced a famous nWO moment and compared it to the reveal. He went even further, openly mocking the logic behind the reveal. The promo blurred the line between storyline and reality. Rhodes also took a subtle shot at WWE management and questioned their decision-making.

Report suggests TKO influence behind Pat McAfee’s WWE storyline role

According to a report from PWInsider Elite, McAfee’s introduction into the storyline did not come about as part of the usual creative process. Instead, the decision has emerged from corporate leadership at TKO Group Holdings.

One source even suggested it could have come from the very top, possibly involving CEO Ari Emanuel. However, that part isn’t confirmed.

The reason behind this move is likely connected to WWE’s bigger media plans. Reports suggest it ties into WWE’s deal with ESPN, especially the plan to air the first hour of each night of WrestleMania on regular TV.

This could explain Pat McAfee’s addition to such a grand storyline. Since he already has a strong presence in sports media, putting him into a major feud with Randy Orton and Cody Rhodes could help in bringing more mainstream attention.

No matter where the idea came from, and whether fans like it or not, it has created a lot of buzz both on and off-screen.
