Although Garibay threw his support behind current Mexican president, Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, the father of F1 driver ‘Checo’ Perez shared comments he reportedly made to several Mexican media publications about his presidential aspirations.
Perez’ father is no stranger to politics, he is currently serving as a member of Mexico’s ruling National Regeneration Movement party, otherwise known as Morena.
The Mexican has also played a key role in the F1 career of his son, helping him secure funding to make his way up the ladder with the likes of billionaire sponsor Carlos Slim.
Perez’ father reveals Mexican presidential dream
On Monday, Garibay shared comments he made about becoming Mexico’s president on Instagram, but caveated his post with support for Sheinbaum, the country’s first female president.
He said: “Today we have the most powerful and beloved president in the world @claudia_shein.
“Thanks to @elsiglodetorreon, but today my commitment is to @gobmexico and @segob_mx @rosaicelarodriguez_ God’s timing is perfect — 2030.”
Reported by the aforementioned El Siglo de Torreon, Perez’s father outlined his political ambitions to several news sites, likening it to his dream of his son becoming an F1 driver.
“When I say I want to be president of Mexico, people tell me I’m crazy. So I like being crazy, I like doing the things others don’t. I’m one of those people who do things others don’t dare to do.”
Elsewhere, Perez himself has been one of the more vocal critics of the F1 2026 regulations, agreeing with former teammate Max Verstappen that the new rules make racing something similar to ‘Mario Kart.’
