A hit-and-run driver struck and killed a man biking on Beacon Hill shortly after midnight Sunday morning, according to the Seattle Police Department. He was 38.
The suspect fled the scene and is still on the loose. Anyone with information should call SPD’s Traffic Collision Investigation Squad at 206-684-8923 (incident number 2025-365188). An SPD Blotter post about the incident does not include a suspect or vehicle description.
Witnesses told SPD that the victim was biking across Beacon Avenue S at South Stevens Street when a person driving southbound on Beacon Ave struck him and then fled the scene. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

The death comes months after new protected bike lanes were installed on Beacon Ave (so recently that on-street and satellite mapping applications may not yet show the current design). The initial report suggests he was on Stevens and was crossing Beacon Ave though it does not say which direction he was traveling. Stevens is an offset intersection. There is a marked crosswalk with rapid flashing lights that are activated by pressing a button that is only accessible from the sidewalk. A person biking in the roadway may be unlikely to activate the lights, which are not legally required to use the crosswalk. The SPD report does not note if the lights were activated at the time of the collision. There are no details about what if any role the road design played. Please note that it is common for initial details to have some inaccuracies, so readers should refrain from jumping to conclusions based on limited details. These kinds of major investigations can take weeks or longer.

The death also comes at a time when bicycling deaths have been at a historic low within the Seattle city limits. SDOT data found zero traffic deaths of bicycle riders in 2024. Though official data is not yet available for 2025, Seattle Bike Blog is not aware of another death this year, either. If true, then this morning’s victim would be the first person to die while biking in Seattle since Steve Hulsman was killed 726 days ago on December 19, 2023. However, there have been far too many serious injuries during this time, and the line between a major injury and a death can be very thin.

Shortly after 12:00 a.m., officers responded to reports of a collision at Beacon Avenue South and South Stevens Street. Officers and Seattle Fire Department medics arrived and found a 38-year-old man unresponsive in the roadway. Medics attempted life-saving measures and pronounced the man deceased at the scene.
Police secured the area, and detectives with the Traffic Collision Investigation Squad (TCIS) responded to investigate.
Witnesses told police the man was riding his bicycle across Beacon Avenue South when a southbound vehicle struck him. The driver fled the scene after the collision.
