Phil Salt falls to bizarre runout after Virat Kohli pulls out midway

What looked like a dream start for Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in the ongoing Match No. 24 of the IPL 2025 clash against Delhi Capitals at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium changed unexpectedly with a bizarre runout of opener Phil Salt

After winning the toss, Capitals skipper Axar Patel elected to field first, and RCB made the most of the home conditions. Salt and Virat Kohli came out all guns blazing, bringing up the fastest fifty of the season in just 2.6 overs. The English opener went all out, Mitchell Starc in the third over, accumulating 30 runs, including three boundaries, two sixes, including a no-ball-induced free hit that went over the keeper’s head for six. By the end of 3.4 overs, RCB were 61/0, and Salt was already at 37 off just 17 deliveries.

However, in the following over’s fifth delivery, Salt pushed a delivery from Axar towards extra cover and called for a quick single. While Kohli responded initially but pulled out midway, leaving Salt stranded i the middle. In the process of turning back, he slipped and despite making a dive, he was run out by a sharp throw from Vipraj Nigam, collected cleanly by KL Rahul behind the stumps.

Devdutt Padikkal, who walked in at number three, struggled to get going and eventually perished for 1 off 8 balls to Mukesh Kumar, who bowled a brilliant wicket-maiden in the sixth over. Soon after, young Vipraj Nigam struck again, this time removing Kohli for 22. Soon, Liam Livingstone too found himself back in the dressing room after adding a mere four runs to the tally. From 61/0 in 3.4 overs, RCB managed to reach just 94/4 by the end of the 11th over, with skipper Rajat Patidar and Jitesh Sharma at the crease.
