Piastri and McLaren top Bahrain mileage

Oscar Piastri edges out Charles Leclerc and George Russell in terms of laps completed in pre-season testing.

As previously reported, the first three days of testing saw Leclerc complete the most laps (222), ahead of Piastri (215) and Carlos Sainz (214), while, with 423 laps, Ferrari was the busiest team, ahead of McLaren and Williams (both on 422).

As it supplies four teams it was no surprise that Mercedes topped the manufacturer’s mileage chart with 1,447 laps, ahead of Ferrari (1,133) which only supplies three teams.

The 11 teams covered 3,809 laps in the opening test, but this dropped to 3,783 this week, no doubt due to the problems at Aston Martin.

This week, Arvid Lindblad (240) tops the charts in terms of laps completed, much of this down to Friday’s marathon, however, once again Russell (235) was up there, as was Piastri (222), with Charles Leclerc and Esteban Ocon on 205, just ahead of Max Verstappen (204).

Mercedes completed 433 laps, compared to Racing Bulls 407 and Haas’ 404 and McLaren’s 395, while poor old Aston Martin could only manage 128.

Again, with 1,555 laps, the Three-Pointed Star led the manufacturers mileage, ahead of Ferrari (1,006) and Red Bull (737).

Across the two tests it remains Piastri, Leclerc and Russell, and while McLaren was the busiest constructor, reliability issues saw Mercedes slip to sixth, with Haas again showing great reliability along with Williams.

However, even for the leading teams it wasn’t all plain sailing, for while Verstappen completed 401 laps, his teammate Isack Hadjar only completed 271 in total, that’s a difference of 130 laps. At Mercedes, Russell completed 128 laps more than Kimi Antonelli, while Lewis Hamilton ran 95 laps less than Leclerc and Norris 57 less than Piastri.

Leclerc and Ferrari grabbed the glory on Friday with the fastest lap of pre-season testing, but aside from all the usual caveats we know that in this new era, it is reliability that matters most, and looking at the mileage stats alone it is clear that there already winners emerging, and, sadly, losers.
