India’s two-time World Cup-winning leg-spinner and IPL stalwart, Piyush Chawla, has officially announced his retirement from all forms of cricket.  

The 36-year-old took to Instagram to share the emotional update, drawing curtains on a career that spanned nearly two decades. 

“After more than two decades on the field, the time has come to bid adieu to the beautiful game,” Piyush Chawla wrote while sharing the news on his Instagram account.  

A crafty leg-break bowler with a knack for crucial breakthroughs, Chawla featured in India’s victorious campaigns in the 2007 T20 World Cup and the 2011 ODI World Cup. He represented India in 3 Tests, 25 ODIs, and 7 T20Is, collecting a total of 43 wickets on the international stage, with his last appearance coming in 2012. 

Chawla was just 17 years and 75 days old when he made his Test debut against England in March 2006, making him India’s second youngest male Test debutant, behind only Sachin Tendulkar.

Performance in IPL

In the IPL, Chawla was a familiar face across multiple franchises, turning out for Kings XI Punjab (now Punjab Kings), Kolkata Knight Riders, Chennai Super Kings, and Mumbai Indians.

He collected 192 wickets in 192 IPL matches, a tally that puts him among the league’s top wicket-takers. He played a crucial role in KKR’s 2014 IPL title, famously hitting the winning runs in the final. 

He was an integral part of KKR’s 2014 IPL-winning squad, famously scoring the winning runs in the final against Kings XI Punjab.  

Piyush Chawla’s stats in domestic cricket

Domestically, Chawla was a giant in Indian cricket. He featured in 137 first-class matches, claiming 446 wickets, and added 573 more wickets across 164 List-A and 297 T20 matches. His consistency and durability made him one of India’s most reliable performers in domestic and franchise cricket. 

Chawla’s final competitive outing came for Uttar Pradesh in the 2024 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, where he signed off in style with a match-winning 4/12 at the Wankhede Stadium.
