Ange Postecoglou couldn’t help but smile when asked if his streak of second-season success might carry on in North London. The question touched on his history of achieving significant milestones in his sophomore year with various teams, hinting at the possibility of replicating that achievement with his current club. The subtle grin suggested Postecoglou’s quiet confidence in continuing his winning trend, a prospect that surely excites fans eager to see him work his magic in the Premier League.
Optimism for the New Season:
After a relatively calm summer compared to the previous year, there is a clear sense of optimism around Ange Postecoglou as he prepares for the new season. The straightforward Australian, who was an insightful pundit for ITV during Euro 2024, outlined his expectations ahead of Tottenham’s opening match against Leicester on Monday night.
Last year, Tottenham was focused on stabilizing after the emotional departure of Harry Kane to Bayern Munich and the turbulent period under Antonio Conte. This season, with Dominic Solanke replacing Kane as the club’s record signing from Bournemouth for an initial £55 million (potentially rising to £65 million), and a fully fit squad, Postecoglou is hopeful of improving on last season’s fifth-place finish.
Aiming for a Top-Four Finish:
While it might be ambitious to expect Tottenham to win the league, there is an expectation that they can seriously challenge for a top-four spot. Postecoglou has a history of success in his second season at previous clubs like South Melbourne, Brisbane Roar, the Australia national team, Yokohama Marinos, and Celtic, where he often secured league titles. However, he knows that replicating this success in the highly competitive Premier League will be his toughest challenge yet.
Tottenham’s Strategic Spending Under Postecoglou:
Tottenham has certainly not shied away from spending to support Postecoglou. The signings of Solanke, as well as young talents like Wilson Odobert, Archie Gray, and Lucas Bergvall, have pushed their spending well over £100 million. With Solanke, the Premier League’s most expensive transfer this summer, Postecoglou is placing significant faith to step into Kane’s shoes after his impressive 19-goal season with Bournemouth.
Postecoglou said, “ My role in all signings is pretty small – I just make the decision. I’m the one that says yes or no. They’re here because I want them here and Dom certainly fits that. I thought he did well against us [last season] and gave us some problems that a lot of other strikers in the league maybe didn’t give us. His mobility and his movement was really impressive. It’s no secret that we love to press and he has a great work ethic. And he can score goals. He’s a presence and he scores different types of goals. I think the way we play suits him.”
Solanke’s Determination and Postecoglou’s Confidence:
Equally significant for Postecoglou is Solanke’s drive to prove himself at the top level once again. Having begun his career at Chelsea before moving to Liverpool, Solanke’s journey reflects a strong determination to rise back to prominence. Postecoglou views this ambition as a positive attribute, seeing it as a crucial factor in the forward’s potential to succeed and make a significant impact at Tottenham.
He further said, “ I really like where he was in his career. I’m a big one on understanding people and their motivations – obviously he was an outstanding young player and he went to some big clubs where it didn’t work out for him. But what do you do in that scenario?”
He added, “ Do you think: ‘Well it’s never going to happen for me’? Or do you try to work your way back up? He’s done remarkably well to get himself back to a position where he’s scored 19 goals in the Premier League last year. It’s a fair feat and he’s got himself back to a big club. I love that aspect because I know he’s got the right kind of mentality.”
One of Postecoglou’s key summer objectives was to relieve Son Heung-min from the central position that proved challenging last season. With Solanke joining the squad and Richarlison back to full fitness after summer surgery on a pelvic injury, Tottenham now boasts an enhanced attacking lineup, providing ample firepower for the upcoming campaign.
He concluded, “As much as the injuries at the back last year cost us, I still felt it was up front that we were most short and the area that we needed to improve on. Richie when he played was outstanding but he had a lot of injuries so we had to play Sonny inside. It was Brennan [Johnson]’s first year at the club. Going into the season having Dom and Richie there with that real physical presence will be important. I think we look a much better team with Sonny out on the left. That’s the exciting bit – we’re looking for improvement in the final third and I think we have by bringing Dom in.”
