Last night’s Monday Night Raw from Toronto, Canada, and while the weather was cold outside, the crowd was hot inside. The Vision continued their ongoing beef with Penta, Dragon Lee, and Rey Mysterio. Fresh off a loss to the Ludchadores last week, Adam Pearce booked an impromptu match between Rey Mysterio and Austin Theory. Unfortunately for the WWE Hall of Famer, he may have been injured during the match. Here’s the latest status on Rey Mysterio’s injury heading into the Royal Rumble.
Did Rey Mysterio Suffer An Injury?
Austin Theory used his former mentor’s (and Vision leader’s) Stomp to finish off Rey Mysterio for the pin. However, Austin Theory using Seth Rollins’ move to get another win wasn’t what everyone was talking about. There are growing concerns that Rey Mysterio got injured in the final moments of the bout.
Austin Theory stopped Rey Mysterio’s aerial attack on the top ropes. The former A-Town Down Under member put Mysterio on his shoulders for an Electric Chair Slam. However, the crafty veteran twisted around to Hurricanrana both of them over the ropes.
The ever-so-athletic Austin Theory held on, keeping Mysterio on his shoulders. Thinking quickly, Rey swung his body around for a Head Scissors, causing Theory to crash into the LEDs on the ring. However, it also seemingly caused an injury to Rey Mysterio.
Austin Theory Gets Win Over Rey Mysterio
After Rey Mysterio got up from the Flying Head Scissors, the GOAT was noticeably limping, holding his right leg. Yet, he continued to carry on with the match.
The Vision would stick their nose in things when Rey Mysterio was mounting a comeback. Chaos erupted at ringside as the luchador’s allies attempted to even the odds. Both sides were teeing off with shots at one another.
Eventually, Rey Mysterio performed a Baseball Slide through the middle ropes to take out the last Vision member standing, Logan Paul. While Rey was crawling back in the ring, Theory dropped him with The Stomp for the win.
After the match, The Vision continued to take out the luchadors. Rey Mysterio could be seen rolling out of the ring. Referee Rod Zapatta threw up the X sign, signaling to the production crew that the competitor was injured.
The Vision Change Plans After Rey Mysterio’s Injury
With a brawl breaking loose in the ring, The Vision was standing tall over Penta and Dragon Lee. So, Paul Heyman’s guys drew their attention to Rey Mysterio. That’s when the fans at home caught wind that something might be up with Rey Mysterio’s health.
Broson Reed was the first to almost pick up the fallen veteran. However, the referee said something that caused him to backpedal. The Tribal Thief tried to let other Vision members know as he slowly lingered away.
Meanwhile, Austin Theory continued on as planned. The former US Champ picked up Mysterio. It was then that the referee and Mysterio communicated the potential injury to Theory.
Theory pretended to struggle over Rey with the referee, while he let Logan Paul know that the legend seemed to be hurt. From there, Logan Paul went to Bron Breakker to fill him in on the devastating news. Instead, they picked Penta up for Bron Breakker to level with a Spear to end the segment.
Conflicting Reports on Potential Rey Mysterio Injury
Rey Mysterio was on the few names announced for the Men’s Royal Rumble so far. It would be a shame for him to miss such a monumental PLE. After all, he was pulled out of WrestleMania last year just days before the show due to a groin injury!
While we don’t know the extent of Rey Mysterio’s injuries, we also don’t know what’s injured. We can all confirm that the injury scare happened after the Head Scissors. Many, at first, were afraid of Rey Mysterio’s right knee getting hurt.
After all, he was clearly clutching it and struggling to put weight on the leg after the move. Rey Mysterio has had at least 12 knee surgeries in the past, with more than half being on his right leg. So, his knees are always a concern.
That said, many reports indicate that Rey Mysterio was clutching his right shoulder after lying on the ground. He was also clutching his shoulder while being helped to the back. Injuring a shoulder would also make sense, as that was the part of his body to hit the ground first when performing the Head Scissors.
Also, Rey Mysterio rolled through when Austin Theory hit The Stomp. Typically, wrestlers hit their forearms on the mat to portray hitting their faces. However, it’s challenging to do that safely with a potential shoulder injury.
If Rey Mysterio injures his shoulder, he joins his son on the sidelines. The WWE Intercontinental and AAA Mega Champion is also dealing with a shoulder injury.
