Victor Wembanyama and the San Antonio Spurs have been rolling as the playoffs approach, establishing themselves as one of the NBA’s top title contenders.
However, excitement was halted when the star big man sustained an injury scare during Monday’s home clash against the Philadelphia 76ers. The setback cast doubt on Wembanyama’s eligibility for major end-of-season awards consideration with just three games remaining, sparking widespread concern.
Victor Wembanyama’s Early Exit vs. 76ers Clouds MVP Race, Triggers Unease
San Antonio (60-19) sits firmly in second place in the Western Conference, two and a half games behind the first-seeded Oklahoma City Thunder (62-16) as the season winds down.
Wembanyama’s two-way dominance has allowed the Spurs to run roughshod over the rest of the league in recent months. They have gone 28-3 since February 1, with the French phenom gaining steam in MVP discussions as a threat to reigning MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander.
Unfortunately for San Antonio, Wembanyama exited early during Monday’s 115-102 victory due to a left rib contusion. This came after the two-time All-Star collided with 76ers star wing Paul George early in the second quarter.

Wembanyama checked out and made his way to the locker room before returning to the game. However, he later headed back to the locker room before halftime, raising alarm.
The 7-foot-4 big man didn’t return for the start of the second half, with backup center Luke Kornet taking his place. Wembanyama was promptly ruled out for the remainder of the evening, finishing with 17 points, 5 rebounds, 1 assist, 3 blocks, and 1 3-pointer on 7-of-11 shooting (63.6%) in just 16 minutes.

While not a major injury, the timing of the setback left the NBA world uneasy, with some outlets sending Wembanyama well-wishes.
“Prayers up for Victor Wembanyama 🙏,” NBA Memes reacted.
“Get well soon, Wemby! 🙏” Courtside Buzz wrote.
Meanwhile, others began analyzing Wembanyama’s prospects of meeting the league’s 65-game requirement for MVP and Defensive Player of the Year, having suited up in 63 regular-season contests and the NBA Cup final.
“Bro Wemby has a left rib contusion. Didn’t that take Ja Morant 3 weeks to recover from? RIP DPOY,” Spurs fan page CLAN the SPURS fan questioned.
“Victor Wembanyama has logged his second game below 20 minutes this season, which will count toward the 65-game minimum. Since he also played in the NBA Cup final, Wemby needs to log just one more game with 20+ minutes this season to qualify for awards,” ClutchPoints’ Brett Siegel pointed out.
The Spurs resume play on Wednesday at home against the Portland Trail Blazers (40-38) with all eyes on Wembanyama’s availability.
