Promoter wants world title at stake for Chisora–Wilder

With Derek Chisora and Deontay Wilder set to share the ring for both of their 50th fights respectively, Kalle Sauerland has called for a world title to be on the line.

Wilder once ruled the heavyweight division for a number of years, with Chisora challenging for the title multiple times.

The fight between ‘Del Boy’ and ‘The Bronze Bomber’ marks a sort of crossroads moment in both fighters’ careers.

Chisora has claimed that however April 4th plays out, he will retire from the sport.

With Wilder, however, he has his eyes set on a final run at becoming a world champion.

Promoter Kalle Sauerland has called for a title to be on the line for this fight. He spoke to Sky Sports Boxing.

“Given Chisora’s position at the very top of the heavyweight rankings right now, and Wilder’s position as well, and given the high-profile nature of the fight, it would be an amazing addition for them to be able to fight for the belt.”

He in fact called out two-time heavyweight world champion Oleksandr Usyk, who he believes has been holding up the belt.

‘The Cat’ is set to return to the ring against former kickboxing world champion Rico Verhoeven.

Remarkably, the fight is set to be staged at the Pyramids of Giza with the Ukrainian’s WBC world title at stake.

It was the IBF belt he holds that Sauerland called for.

“Oleksandr Usyk has not had one single mandatory defence of the IBF in his reign as IBF heavyweight champion.

“That’s the politics of boxing. We will be speaking to the IBF to see whether there is something that can resolve the situation and we will be lobbying for such a move.”

Usyk reclaimed his IBF world title just last year in July when he stopped Daniel Dubois for the second time.

Having held the belt for just seven months, Sauerland may struggle to force him to vacate or step aside.

A fight with Usyk for the winner may be possible, but an immediate world title shot in April seems unlikely.
