Purple Row After Dark: Revisiting the 2021 MLB Draft

A large majority of the top-of-the-class prospects from this draft don’t look good in hindsight. Frelick, a Boston College outfielder who ranked as the No. 9 player in the class, is one of the rare exceptions. From his 2021 draft report:

“Frelick is one of the safer college hitters in the draft, with a chance to be a dynamic sparkplug who hits at the top of a lineup and plays good defense in the middle of the field.”

That outlook has largely panned out for Frelick, though most of his defensive work has come in right field since he plays on a Brewers team that puts center field defenders in every outfield spot. He took a step forward as a hitter in 2025 and slashed .288/.351/.405 with 12 home runs, 20 doubles and 15 stolen bases. He primarily played right field but can handle all three outfield positions and has been one of baseball’s better outfield defenders over the last three seasons.
