Quinn vs Opelka, Berrettini vs Mannarino

Day 1 in Indian Wells features an all-American showdown between Ethan Quinn and Reilly Opelka, with the winner to face Ben Shelton. Matteo Berrettini and Adrian Mannarino are also on Wednesday’s schedule of play.

Reilly Opelka vs. Ethan Quinn

Quinn and Opelka will be squaring off for the first time in their careers when they collide in round one of the BNP Paribas Open on Wednesday. At 21 years old, Quinn has peaked as high as No. 64 in the world and currently registers at No. 73. The former NCAA singles champion from the University of Georgia has been up and down so far in 2026, but a third-round performance at the Australian Open was especially impressive (defeated both Tallon Griekspoor and Hubert Hurkacz in straight sets).

Opelka heads into Indian Wells as a bit of a question mark, having not played since the Aussie Open. Unsurprisingly, the 6’11” American has never fared well at this tournament — with a 3-6 lifetime record. In six previous trips to the desert, where conditions are far from ideal for him, Opelka has lost his opening match four times. Against a more in-form opponent, that trend is likely to continue.

Matteo Berrettini vs. Adrian Mannarino

An injury-plagued Berrettini could really use some wins as he tries to work his way back up the rankings (currently 66th). The Italian missed the entire summer hard-court swing in 2025 and is off to a modest 3-3 start this season.

Up first for Berrettini on Wednesday is a third showdown against Mannarino, who has won both of their previous meetings — 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 at the 2018 Australian Open and 7-5, 7-6(5) last fall in Shanghai. Fortunately for Berrettini, Indian Wells conditions should be favorable for him in this matchup. It’s certainly not as bad as clay would be for Mannarino, but it’s not much better. As long as the former Wimbledon finalist serves relatively well, he should have the edge in this setting.

Pick: Berrettini in 2
