Rachel and Daibhidh lead home U17s as young athletes relish Falkirk

Rachel Caves rose to the challenges to win U17 gold at the Lindsays National XC and then could not wait to watch role model Laura Muir.

The Harmeny AC athlete was on the podium a year earlier at U15 but savoured the longer distance this time to win gold.

‘The course was really quite muddy today and longer distance than last year for me after moving up an age group but I think I enjoyed it more,’ said Rachel, impressive on the track recently at the EAP meet.

‘It felt like longer but I responded to that and it was a good race with the other girls. Now I cannot wait to watch Laura Muir in the Senior Women’s race.’

Rachel won by eight seconds from Millie Gairn of Airdrie Harriers. The bronze medal went to Holly Simpson.

Holly’s run led Giffnock North AC to team golds with Rachel’s Harmeny taking the silvers. Inverclyde AC took the bronze medals.

Cambuslang Harrier Daibhidh Kinnaird is no stranger to podiums and proved his quality again in the U17 Men’’s race.

Daibhidh had won last year in his first year in this age group and duly completed the double from Ben Baillie (East Kilbride) and Louie Muir Giffnock North AC).

Louie led Giffnock to team golds there with Gala Harriers taking silvers and Falkirk Victoria Harriers the bronzes.

Luca Anderson gave Anster Haddies a national champion in the U15 Boys race. Luca won by five seconds from Harry Robinson of Dundee Hawkhill and Toby Comer of Edinburgh AC was third.

Team outcome: 1 Falkirk; 2 Giffnock; 3 Harmeny.

Aberdeen AAC athlete Emily Taylor won the U15 Girls race by three seconds from Nina Clark of East Kilbride. Emi Daunt of Edinburgh AC was third.

Team outcome: 1 Giffnock; 2 Aberdeen; 3 Dundee Hawkhill.

Dunfermline Track and Field athlete Alfie Whyte won the U13 Boys race from Kilmarnock’s Callum Cooke with third for Christopher Cameron of Giffnock.

Team outcome: 1 Giffnock; 2 Perth Strathtay Harriers; Strathearn Harriers

The U13 Girls race had opened the programme and featured a big winning margin for Millie Glass-Park of Aberdeen AAC. Silver went to Abbie Boyle of Law and District AAC and bronze to Rose Davidson of Gala.

Team outcome: 1 Gala Harriers; 2 Edinburgh AC; 3 Perth Strathtay Harriers.
