The franchise has moved quickly to bring in Sri Lanka all-rounder Dasun Shanaka as his replacement, aiming to keep their squad balanced.

Curran was expected to play a key role for RR this season as a reliable all-round option. His absence forces a rethink, especially in the lower middle order and death overs.

Kumar Sangakkara, RR’s Director of Cricket and Head Coach, admitted the team is disappointed to lose such an important player at the last moment.

“We are disappointed to lose a player of Sam’s calibre so close to the start of the season,” Sangakkara said.

“Sam brings immense value with both bat and ball. However, we are pleased to have found an ideal replacement in Dasun Shanaka, a finisher with the bat and a quality all-rounder who helps maintain the balance of our side.”

RR had built their plans around Curran’s ability to contribute in both departments. His injury left a gap, especially in crunch situations.

Shanaka now steps in with a similar role in mind. He is known for his finishing ability and can chip in with useful seam bowling when needed.

The team management believes his experience in international cricket will help him adjust quickly to the IPL environment.

RR will be hoping Shanaka strengthens the lower middle order and provides depth during tight run chases.

All eyes are now on how fast Shanaka settles into the squad, with Rajasthan Royals set to face Chennai Super Kings in their opening match on March 30 in Guwahati.
