Rams QB Matthew Stafford Addresses NFL Future After NFC Championship Loss

It’s the end of the line for Matthew Stafford and the Los Angeles Rams. Their Super Bowl dream went up in smoke on Sunday after their 31-27 loss to Sam Darnold and the Seattle Seahawks in the NFC championship game.

Stafford did all he could for the Rams on Sunday, registering 22-of-35 completed passes for 374 yards, three touchdowns and zero interceptions. The three-time Pro Bowl quarterback also added 16 yards on the ground on two carries.

It wasn’t enough for L.A. It’s the Seahawks who are now headed to Super Bowl 60 on Feb. 9 to face Drake Maye and the New England Patriots.

It was a heartbreaking end for Stafford, who is coming off an incredible campaign. The 37-year-old played all 17 games in the regular season, registering 388-of-597 completed passes (65.0%). He led the NFL in passing yards (4,707) and touchdowns (46), firmly establishing himself as an MVP frontrunner entering the playoffs.

Stafford just completed the first season of his two-year, $84 million deal

with the Rams. After Sunday’s loss, a reporter asked Stafford about whether he plans to return in 2026. The Super Bowl-winning QB had a blunt response.

“I can’t generalize six months of my life ten minutes after a loss,” Stafford said.

The Rams QB made it clear that he isn’t prepared to provide a definitive statement about his future in the NFL. He is still processing Sunday’s season-ending loss and will need some time to think about his plans for 2026.

Stafford is a 17-year veteran. Before taking his talents to the Rams in 2021, the All-Pro QB spent 12 years with the Detroit Lions, which is the same team that selected him No. 1 overall in the 2009 NFL Draft.
