Rangpur Riders’ participation in the Global Super League (GSL) 2024 final is hanging by a thread. The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has demanded that the Riders release three key players—Soumya Sarkar, Afif Hossain, and Rishad Hossain—to join the national ODI squad ahead of a series against the West Indies.
Rangpur Riders in GSL 2024 final secured their place after a convincing 23-run victory over Lahore Qalandars via the DLS method in a rain-affected match. They are set to face Cricket Victoria in the tournament’s much-anticipated final on December 6. However, the BCB’s decision to recall the trio has thrown a wrench into their plans.
The board had initially allowed domestic players to participate until the group stage of the GSL. However, with the ODI series against West Indies commencing on December 8, they are now requiring Rangpur to release their stars. The Riders’ management has formally requested an exception to retain the players for the final but awaits the board’s response.
Rangpur Riders in GSL 2024 final face a unique challenge due to tournament rules mandating seven local players in every playing XI. Without the recalled players, the Riders may struggle to field a full team. A forced forfeit would not only deny them their shot at the title but also deal a significant blow to Bangladesh’s cricketing reputation on the global stage.
“If the BCB doesn’t reconsider, Rangpur Riders in GSL 2024 final could miss the game entirely,” the team said in an official statement. “This would tarnish not just the team’s image but also Bangladesh cricket as a whole, especially in such a high-profile tournament.”
The Riders’ journey to the GSL final has already captured fans’ hearts, and the possibility of missing out due to external circumstances has left supporters disappointed. With the clock ticking, the team and its fans are hopeful for a resolution that allows Rangpur to compete and represent Bangladesh on the global stage.
