Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma are cricketers who have enjoyed the best of their careers with Team India, but they are currently not in good form. Both these stalwarts apparently struggled very hard in the year 2024, especially in the longest format of the game. Kohli and Rohit have received advice from a familiar face after dismal performances in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, which has put their Test future in jeopardy. The former India coach, Ravi Shastri, said retirement is solely in their hands, but things can change when one does a certain thing. That thing has been named as domestic cricket by Shastri, who did not restrain himself while speaking about the two players.
“If there’s a gap for them (Kohli and Rohit), I think they should go back and play some domestic cricket and see how it is,” Shastri said in the ICC Review.
“To have played such a long time in Test match cricket, it should be important for them to play domestic cricket because it will keep them in touch with the present generation and at the same time, they can also enrich that younger generation with their experience,” Shastri added.
Rohit Sharma last played a domestic match in 2016 while Virat Kohli has been off the circuit since 2012.
The former Indian coach also mentioned that going back to domestic cricket would help them readjust to spin, which has not been their strong suit in 2024.
“More than that, you are actually going to play more spin than you will ever play. So being recorded in India, India on turning tracks is not going to be the greatest. If you have quality spinners in the opposite side, they really are able to trouble you,” Shastri Said. “And they troubled India.”
Both Kohli and Rohit averaged below 25 in Test cricket during 2024. For Rohit, it started with an excellent home series against England but ended with his worst, where he only managed 31 runs in five innings against Australia. For Kohli, on the other hand, it was an inconsistent year throughout.
