Ravindra Jadeja Set to Return for Saurashtra in Vijay Hazare Trophy: Report

Ravindra Jadeja has confirmed that he will turn out for Saurashtra in the ongoing Vijay Hazare Trophy, a move that could shape his limited-overs future.

The 37-year-old is expected to play two group matches, against Services on January 6 and Gujarat on January 8, both in Alur. For now, this is the clear plan, with Jadeja keen to get game time under his belt.

However, his availability could change if he is picked for India’s ODI series against New Zealand. The Indian squad is set to assemble in Vadodara ahead of the first ODI on January 11, which may overlap with his domestic commitments.

These Vijay Hazare games come at a crucial time for Jadeja. He is trying to hold on to his place in India’s white-ball setup, with competition for the all-rounder slot getting tighter by the series.

Jadeja was left out of the ODI squad for the Australia tour, a notable omission after years as a first-choice pick. He returned to the side in South Africa but had an average run, taking just one wicket in three matches and scoring 56 runs in two innings.

In his absence, Axar Patel has made the most of his chances. Axar’s steady batting and consistent left-arm spin have strengthened his case as the preferred option in ODIs.

With limited spots available, especially for similar all-rounders, performances at the domestic level now matter more than ever. India are unlikely to play two like-for-like left-arm spin all-rounders together, especially with future events in mind.

A strong showing for Saurashtra could keep Jadeja firmly in the conversation for major tournaments, including the 2027 World Cup. A quiet outing, though, may tilt the balance further in Axar’s favour.

India’s chief selector Ajit Agarkar has already spoken about the situation, making it clear that Jadeja is still in the plans but faces real competition.

“Yes, he has confirmed to play these two games on January 6 and January 8. This is the plan for now,” a Saurashtra official said, underlining that the focus is on match practice.

Agarkar also pointed to team balance and conditions as key factors in selection, hinting that every spot must now be earned, not assumed.
