RCB and CSK Likely to Engage in a Bidding War for Ranji Trophy Star Gurjapneet Singh

Gurjapneet Singh is a left-arm pacer from Tamil Nadu who was in fine form in the first phase of the Ranji Trophy 2024/25.

A number of relatively unknown but quality domestic performers will start a bidding war in the upcoming IPL 2025 auction. They have been making waves in local competitions and will be on the radar of several IPL franchises.

Among them will be Gurjapneet Singh, whose rise has been prominent this year. Raised in Ambala, he migrated to Tamil Nadu after being ignored at Punjab’s group levels.

He is a left-arm pacer from Tamil Nadu who was in fine form in the first phase of the Ranji Trophy 2024/25. The 26-year-old has 13 wickets at an average of 19.69 and a strike rate of 50.30 in seven innings, including a five-wicket haul, in this Ranji Trophy.

He can move the new ball both ways and bowls steady lengths from an awkward angle to agitate the batters. He bowls with set plans, as visible by his dismissal of Cheteshwar Pujara during the game against Saurashtra last month.

Apart from generating movement with the new ball, what really makes him stand out is his ability to hit hard lengths and bowl at pace. It is a glaring feature of his bowling because he has that extra speed, and his height aids him further.

His height makes his natural length slightly shorter, and with his pace, Gurjapneet pushes the batter off the back foot and hurries the batter. Hence, he can be a powerplay and middle-over specialist, and his left-arm angle will bring variety to the bowling attack.

He bowled to the Indian team before the first Test against Bangladesh and impressed one and all. In fact, he also dismissed Virat Kohli in the nets, after which Kohli gave him some precious advice as well.

He honed his T20 game by featuring in the Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL), a local T20 competition. He impressed in the tournament and caught Chennai Super Kings’ eyes.

Consequently, CSK included him as their net bowler in the previous few editions of the Indian Premier League (IPL). He would have learnt a lot under the guidance of some big names and improved massively.

He attended the trials of Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) recently, which means he will be on their radar. Dinesh Karthik, the local man, has previously seen him play for Tamil Nadu, so he will suggest the owners go after him during the auction.

CSK and RCB might be most interested in getting him during the IPL 2025 auction. Given his superior skillsets, Gurjapneet Singh can be permanent in IPL XI in future.
