Royal Challengers Bengaluru head into IPL 2026 with a fresh identity, one that is no longer built around just Virat Kohli. Former stars AB de Villiers and Anil Kumble believe the team now looks complete and ready to dominate.
De Villiers said RCB have finally found the right mix of players who can win matches as a group. He feels the team is in a strong position to build a winning streak in the coming seasons.
“I feel RCB are in that zone now where they can go bang, bang, bang-perhaps two or three trophies in a row,” he said.
Last season’s title win under captain Rajat Patidar showed this change clearly. Contributions came from many players like Liam Livingstone, Jitesh Sharma and Romario Shepherd, not just Kohli.
Kohli still remains the heart of the team. His energy and mindset continue to push the squad forward, but he now has more support around him than ever before.
“He brings energy, belief and sets standards-on and off the field. But now he has a squad of fighters around him,” De Villiers added.
Despite taking a short break recently, De Villiers expects Kohli to return in top form this season. He believes the star batter will once again lead from the front.
“He has the best work ethic I’ve ever seen. He won’t come undercooked. I’m expecting a great season from him.”
Kumble also echoed similar views and highlighted how RCB have improved their bowling, especially in the spin department with Krunal Pandya and Suyash Sharma adding balance.
He compared Kohli’s bond with RCB to MS Dhoni’s connection with Chennai Super Kings, calling it a lasting legacy.
“Like Dhoni and CSK, Virat and RCB will always be synonymous. That legacy will not change,” Kumble said.
Kumble also hinted that fans might see something new from Kohli’s batting this year, as the veteran continues to evolve his game.
“Great players always look to improve. Don’t be surprised if he comes with something new this season.”
With a stronger Indian core and a more settled bowling attack, RCB will begin IPL 2026 as defending champions and one of the favourites.
