The game late goals from substitutes Paddy Lane and Matt Ritchie to see Reading come from behind to beat fellow play-off hopefuls Bradford 2-1.
The Bantams had gone ahead thanKS TO Matt Pennington in the 68th minute, but just as they looked to pick up three points, Lane levelled for the Royals in the 90th minute, and then Ritchie put the hosts in front in the seventh minute of stoppage-time to see Reading unbeaten run extended to five matches.
Reading manager Leam Richardson said, per the club website: “It was a good game in the first half, tactically, and we played through their press quite a few times. They probably scored against the run of play, and it rocked us for 15-20 minutes. The response was excellent and we finished the game really strong. If there was ever going to be a moment where you realise what a squad is for, that was it.
“That is what I demand- that they maintain the level or lift it. Today, I always ask if they can give any more for the shirt and I don’t think they could today. I am made up for the fans and the players.”
“It was all about technique. I have known Paddy for a long time, and he is a good player, but he has had his injury issues, and you can see it has knocked him a bit. It happens sometimes within squads and players. He has been working terrifically hard to get back in and amongst everything. The goal was magnificent. When it hit the net, the crowd and noise was fantastic.
“The confidence it will give the individual- talking about Paddy and Matt Ritchie, who has trained incredibly hard and typified what it takes to be a senior player. You don’t have that many Premier League appearances and turn up to still do it at his age. He is an influence around us and wants to play all the time. When your chance and opportunity comes, be ready because it can present moments like that in front of fans like that.
“We have had a couple of disappointments late on in a couple of games, which we have spoken about. We have come a hell of a long time since October, and we are very aware of that. We want to be the finished article, but it will take time. These lads are working tirelessly every day. Can you give any more for the shirt? I thought we did that today.”
Bradford’s Graham Alexander said, per the club website:
“For 80 or 90 minutes, that was arguably the best performance we have had away from home.
“The team gave hardly any chances away; we grabbed the goal that should have won the match, but it was two poor moments that cost us right at the end.
“I think we have to become more ruthless.
“I was proud of the way we handled ourselves and the way we went about our business. If we play like that and win against Leyton Orient, I will be happy.
“The bottom line is we had chances to win, and we were not clinical enough. It leaves the door open, and you absolutely must keep a clean sheet to see it out.”
