Nigel McGuinness’ recent absence from AEW commentary had fans asking questions — but there’s now a clear answer.
After a few weeks away from the desk on AEW programming, with Excalibur filling in on broadcasts, speculation began to circulate about whether something was wrong. However, a new update has shut down those concerns.
During a Q&A session on February 28, 2026, PWInsider’s Mike Johnson was directly asked about McGuinness’ absence from commentary and whether everything was okay. Johnson responded with a straightforward clarification.
“We are told it was a planned absence and he returns to Collision with tonight’s episode.”
This confirms there is no backstage issue or health concern behind McGuinness stepping away temporarily. The time off was reportedly scheduled in advance, and he will resume his role on the February 28th edition of AEW Collision.
McGuinness recently signed a new long-term deal with AEW that keeps him primarily on commentary while still allowing for occasional in-ring appearances when the story calls for it. So it’s clear that his brief time away was simply part of that ongoing schedule — not a sign of anything more serious.
