Reds starting pitcher Brady Singer exits spring start early

Cincinnati Reds starting pitcher Brady Singer was on the mound this afternoon in Goodyear, Arizona as the Reds took on the Colorado Rockies. He had been outstanding, throwing 3.2 shutout innings and giving up just two singles. But after getting TJ Rumfield to fly out to center for the second out in the 4th inning the trainer came to the mound and Singer appeared to be talking to him about his hand. He spent about 45 seconds talking with the staff before walking back to the dugout. Singer told Mark Sheldon of Reds.com that he had a blister on his index finger and he “wasn’t overly concerned and left more as a precaution”.

Singer, who has started 32 games in each of his last two seasons, was slated to be Cincinnati’s #3 starter to begin the year behind Andrew Abbott and Nick Lodolo. Singer was likely going to get one more start before the regular season began – following the normal rotation he would pitch in Milwaukee during the 2-game exhibition series there before an off day that precedes Opening Day.

That additional time he could be beneficial for the Reds and Singer as he could potentially skip that start and maybe just throw a side session to be ready to go for the regular season start on Sunday the 29th against the Boston Red Sox.
