The young Chennai Super Kings (CSK) batter, Ayush Mhatre, at the age of 17, nearly helped his team pull off a stunning chase against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium on May 3, with a sensational 94 off 48 balls. Though CSK eventually ending on the losing side, India’s T20I captain and Mumbai Indians’ star batter Suryakumar Yadav heaped huge praise on the youngster’s intent and bravery.
Chasing a huge total of 214, CSK got off to a slow start but quickly found the pace thanks to Mhatre. He began by targeting ace pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar, smacking him for 26 runs in a single over. From there on, he kept the scoreboard ticking. Suryakumar took to his social media to praise his fellow Mumbai teammate.
“Innings filled with intent, bravery, and fire! The future is here. Remember the name,” Suryakumar wrote on X.

Coming in as a replacement for the injured Ruturaj Gaikwad earlier in the season, Mhatre has rapidly made his name, and the recent knock just added to his growing fame. His 114-run stand with Ravindra Jadeja (77* off 45) almost took the Chennai-based franchise to a winning position.
However, just when the visitors looked to register a clinical victory, RCB made an incredible comeback as Lungi Ngidi deceived Mhatre with a slower ball and restricted him to 94. With 15 needed off the final six, Yash Dayal held his nerves, conceding only 11 runs to seal a narrow two-run win for his team.
Meanwhile, CSK head coach Stephen Fleming opened up about Mhatre’s temperament and the composure he displayed at the trials, and how he has backed it up at IPL 2025.
“He’s got talent. He’s got hand-eye coordination. He’s got a beautiful, silky swing. He’s aggressive. Everything that we like about a modern-day T20 player, But, to me, it’s the temperament and being able to execute in a trial and then on the big stage. That’s what I’m most impressed with. It’s one thing to have a lot of shots, but to be able to execute that game plan on a big stage in front of some of the biggest players in the world is what I admire,” Fleming said after the game.
