The Indian cricket team has begun its rigorous training in Australia as it prepares to defend the Border Gavaskar Trophy. India will play a five-match series against Australia starting November 22 but also knows that winning 4-0 will see them qualify for the World Test Championship automatically. However India captain Rohit Sharma is not in Australia. No official statement has been made with the reason for his not being there.
Prior to leaving Australia, Gambhir, the coach of India stated: ‘At this point in time, there is no confirmation. we expect he will be available. We will tell you once we confirm’.
On Wednesday, the PR team of Rohit Sharma shared a picture of the Indian cricket team training in Mumbai. This post was shared during the Wednesday by a handle with this image of Rohit Sharma.
Although there is still no confirmation about the date Rohit Sharma is expected to reach Australia, reports have suggested – ‘He is doing what any father would at this stage’.
“His leaving is still up in the air. That is entirely reliant on how things progress in regard to family issues. He is being a good husband at this stage, which means he is with his wife and the rest of the family. At the same time, however, he is making sure that he is in the right ‘zone’ for the Test series and will be batting in Mumbai at every opportunity,” a source was quoted by Times Of India.
Earlier, Sunil Gavaskar said if Rohit Sharma was missing the first test against Australia, he said Jasprit Bumrah who was the vice captain should take over the captaincy.
“Rohit Sharma hasn’t participated in the first Test, as we’ve been reading for a while now and looks like he wouldn’t play the second either if this is the case.
Then I say that even before selection for the second test matching to Australia, the Indian selection committee should announce that – if you have to rest, then you have to. If there are personal issues, then consider those. Otherwise, if you have to miss two thirds of the matches, then for such a tour, you should only go as a player. We will make the vice-captain the captain for this tour, Gavaskar had addressed Sports Tak.
Unlike Finch, the former Australia skipper, Gavaskar’s claim wasn’t taken well. Finch was supported by Rohit’s wife Ritika Sajdeh for his defense via social media.
“I totally disagree with Sunny on that. Rohit Sharma is the captain and drives the Indian cricket team. If there is also a need to stay at home because one’s wife is expecting a child… that is such a joyous occasion… and one is allowed to take all the time off that one requires in that situation,” Finch said in an interview With ESPNcricinfo.”
