Retired Australia star makes himself available for the Border Gavaskar Trophy: Reports

He hasn’t played for Australia for a while but is looking to make a return at the top.

A retired Australian player is eyeing a comeback in the national team during the impending Border Gavaskar Trophy. He hasn’t played for Australia for a while but is looking to make a return at the top.

According to a report by Code Sports, David Warner, who retired from Test cricket earlier this year, has made himself available for the high-octane series against India later in the year. He played his last red-ball game against Pakistan in January earlier this year before retiring from this format.

Later, he featured in the T20 World Cup 2024, and after Australia failed to qualify for the semifinal, Warner called time on his white-ball career, retiring from all formats. However, he is willing to make a comeback if the team wants and is also ready to play in the ongoing Sheffield Shield to get into the red-ball groove.

Since retiring from his national side, he has been actively playing in various T10 and T20 leagues around the globe. Recently, he was involved in the MAX60 Caribbean, a local T10 tournament, where he is the captain of the Boca Raton Trailblazers and has played a few quality knocks while opening the innings.

Australia’s opening slot vacant after Steven Smith moves back to No.4

Australia are actively looking for their next opener after Steven Smith confirmed he will return to his original position – No.4 – in the Border Gavaskar Trophy. Following Warner’s retirement, Smith was willing to open the innings, which his team obliged, but the returns were mediocre, for he didn’t look close to his best at any stage.

He scored 171 runs at an average of 28.50, including a fifty, in eight outings while opening for Australia in Tests. Hence, Smith will bat at his original position at No.4, where he has a marvellous record in Tests.

Since Cameron Green is also out of the summer, Australia must find alternatives at the top. No wonder Warner sees an opportunity to take that opening slot.

While opening, Warner has 8747 runs at an average of 45.08 in 202 Test innings for Australia. He also has 37 fifties and 26 centuries to his name.
