RETURN TO SCOTLAND A MASSIVE SUCCESS

The return of senior international ice hockey to Scotland delivered a sell-out success as Edinburgh hosted the IIHF European Cup of Nations at Murrayfield Ice Arena over three days.

Great Britain, Poland, Slovenia and Ukraine played six fast-paced games in front of impressive crowds, culminating in a capacity 2,900 on Saturday for the final day of action.

Ukraine lifted the trophy with seven points from three games, with Slovenia finishing second and Great Britain third.

Grant King, Interim Chief Executive of Ice Hockey UK, said: “Thank you to the city of Edinburgh and people across Scotland and beyond for turning out in such numbers.

“They created an outstanding atmosphere across the tournament. Seeing Murrayfield full of passion again was special.

“Bringing GB back to Scotland was a major priority for us and the response from fans, volunteers and the rink team has absolutely vindicated that decision.

“The GB Barmy Army were superb as always – and together with the travelling supporters of Poland, Slovenia and Ukraine – they helped make this a brilliant international event.”

The tournament also showcased the next generation with nine players making their senior GB debuts.

Patrick Larkin, Bayley Harewood, Jack Hopkins and Finley Bradon scored their first goals at senior level, while 18-year-old netminder Ben Clarke-Leach made his first start in GB’s thrilling 5–4 win over Poland. Nineteen-year-old Dominick Jaglar was also added to the roster as back-up.

King added: “Developing the next generation means giving talented young players meaningful exposure to the senior environment, training at the required level, learning from established internationals, and being tested by the standards around them every day.

“That’s exactly what Edinburgh delivered and the young players didn’t just take part, they contributed.”

Ice Hockey UK would also like to thank Edinburgh Ice Arena staff and the volunteer team for their support in delivering the event, alongside the local junior clubs and community groups who took part in activities around the tournament.
