Richard Keys has been talking about Newcastle United.
The former Sky Sports presenter weighing in on the controversy surrounding the use of technology.
Premier League VARS and on the pitch referees making decisions.
Richard Keys talking about this past weekend.
With special mention of the Bruno Guimaraes ‘Olimpico’ goal against Burnley, scoring direct from a corner.
Richard Keys writing on his personal blog – 8 December 2025:
“We can’t get it right using the tech how we currently do.
“Newcastle’s first should’ve been disallowed because Anthony Gordon is clearly impeding Burnley’s keeper.
“Of course Brighton’s equaliser was preceded by a clear handball and why did Antony Taylor need VAR to give Leeds a clear pen?
“Doesn’t he see anything? It’s two weeks in a row now he’s needed the tech to clear up something we all saw.”
My thoughts
We all know that Richard Keys is always on a mission to annoy as many people as possible but no surprise to see many Burnley fans claiming the same thing.
So has Richard Keys got a point on this occasion?
I saw what happened at the time inside St James’ Park and have watched replays loads of times. Both to revisit Bruno’s brilliant strike AND to look closely at what happened between Anthony Gordon and Martin Dubravka.
Now, I am happy to admit after games if I think Newcastle United have got a positive decision that they shouldn’t have got. I don’t understand the mentality of fans of any club who will refuse to admit it when the match officials get something wrong in your favour. After all, if I say Richard Keys is correct and Anthony Gordon did commit a foul, it isn’t as though my confession will then see the Newcastle goal and win chalked off!
As it happens, for me there was absolutely nothing wrong with what Anthony Gordon did. All teams put at least one player as close to the goalkeeper as possible and when you look at the replays, Dubravka is trying to push Gordon out of his way and the Newcastle player is simply pushing back against that with his body. Basically, as the corner is swung in, Anthony Gordon is just standing his ground, he has no obligation at all to move out of the way of Dubravka.
I think it is also very noticeable that there is next to no reaction from the Burnley players in terms of claiming a foul. Especially Martin Dubravka himself, it looks to me that he just appears gutted that he didn’t deal with the corner in a better way.
