Former Australian skipper Ricky Ponting has entered into a multi-year agreement with Punjab Kings, where he will serve as their head coach in the Indian Premier League (IPL). The news was confirmed by the franchise through their various social media accounts.
“I would like to thank the Punjab Kings for giving me this opportunity as the new Head Coach. This is a welcome change for me in terms of challenge. I had wonderful discussions with them regarding our future plans which really excited me because our visions for the team were aligned perfectly. We all want to reward the supporters who have been with us all through these years and can assure them that they will be seeing another Punjab Kings,” said Ponting in an official release.
In 2018, delhi capitals saw the beginning of ponting’s 7-year journey with them which has just ended this year due to mixed performances. When he was at the helm, they played play offs thrice between 2019 and 2021 and their best moment came about in 2020 when it was runners up for the first time in its history during an IPL match final.
However, it has been rumored that Ponting will also have a say on who supports him. Apart from Bayliss, PBKS had other members in its support staff last year, including Sanjay Bangar as head of cricket development, Charl Langveldt who was fast bowling coach and Sunil Joshi who handled spin bowling duties.
On his part Bayliss served as part of Kolkata Knight Riders’ coaching staff under captain Gautam Gambhir who steered the team towards winning titles back to back during 2012 and 2014. Nonetheless he hasn’t been able to copy any measure of success within Punjab’s structure.
The franchise would also require finding a new captain after Shikhar Dhawan announced retirement earlier this year. Although Sam Curran captained PBKS in some of their past games last season; with mega auctions coming up soonest possible, zeroing down on players for retention before auction remains Ponting’s first task hands down now.
The franchise is also considering finding a new captain after Shikhar Dhawan announced his retirement at the beginning of this year. Sam Curran led PBKS for a few matches in the previous season, but ahead of the mega auctions, Ponting’s immediate concern will be to pinpoint the players that the franchise would like to hold off on re-signing ahead of the Auction.
July this year saw Delhi Capitals admitted to Ricardo C. Ponting resignation. The 49-year-old had been with the franchise as head coach since the 2018 season and helped them reach their first-ever finals place in 2020. Nevertheless, during each of the last three seasons, Delhi Capitals missed out on the playoffs and placed fifth, ninth and sixth respectively.
Before joining Delhi Capital in the 2018 season respectively, he had served as chief coach For mumbai Indians in cash-rich league aiding them to win under Rohit Sharma’s captaincy during its 2015 edition – world’s most expensive franchise cricket tournament.
