Indian cricket team captain Rohit Sharma has now hit the same number of sixes in One Day Internationals (ODIs) as Chris Gayle. Both players are tied for second place with 331 sixes each, and Shahid Afridi is the only player ahead of them with 351 sixes. Rohit needed just two more sixes to beat Gayle’s record, but he managed to hit only one during his 35 runs scored in 20 balls.
Rohit had a good opportunity to surpass the famous West Indian batsman, but he was dismissed while trying to hit a left-arm spinner named Dunith Wellalage in the 8th over of the match. To give you some context, India is trying to chase 249 runs in the third and final ODI to prevent their first series loss against Sri Lanka in a bilateral series since 1997.
Most sixes in ODIs:
Shahid Afridi -351 sixes
Rohit Sharma -331 sixes*
Chris Gayle – 331 sixes
Earlier, Sri Lanka chose to bat first after winning the toss. They scored 248 runs in 50 overs, losing seven wickets, thanks to a good start by openers Pathum Nissanka and Avishka Fernando. Avishka scored 96 runs before being dismissed, and this is when India started to fight back. Sri Lanka was doing well at 171/1 in the 36th over but then quickly fell to 199/6 in just eight overs.
Riyan Parag, playing his first ODI match, was India’s best bowler, taking 3 wickets for 54 runs in his nine overs.
Meanwhile, India is having a hard time chasing the 249 runs, as they have lost four wickets for only about 70 runs, with Virat Kohli also out. Players like Shreyas Iyer, Washington Sundar, Axar Patel, and debutant Riyan Parag are important for the visiting team.
